How much does it cost to fly a dog out of Hawaii?

Hawaiian Airlines Pet Policy
Hawaiian Airlines Pet Policy

Travelling with your pets can be a hassle-free and comfortable experience with Hawaiian Airlines Pet Policy. Whether you're flying within the Hawaiian Islands or between Hawaii and the US Mainland, the airline accommodates small dogs, cats, and household birds in various ways. Options include bringing your pet into the passenger cabin, checking them in as baggage, or transporting larger pets via cargo. Hawaiian Airlines prioritises the safety and comfort of your pets throughout their journey, providing clear guidelines for carriers and advising on breeds that may face travel challenges.

Pet in cabin

Hawaiian Airlines Pet Policy allows for a comfortable and safe journey for your pets. When flying within the Hawaiian Islands or between Hawaii and the US Mainland, small dogs and cats are welcome in the passenger cabin. The key requirement is that the combined weight of the pet and carrier should not exceed 25 lbs (11 kg). Each passenger is allowed to travel with one carrier, housing either one animal or two puppies or kittens from the same litter or breed. The cost for pets in the cabin is $35 on inter-island flights, and $125 for flights to and from the US Mainland. However, pets are not accepted on international routes or flights to/from JFK, Boston, or Austin.

Pets in checked baggage

Hawaiian Airlines offers a pet transport service as checked baggage for dogs, cats, and household birds on both inter-island flights and those between Hawaii and the US Mainland. To be eligible for this service, the combined weight of your pet and its carrier must not exceed 70 lbs (32 kg). For pets travelling on inter-island flights, there is a fee of $60 (each way). For flights to or from the mainland, the charge is $225 (each way). It's important to note that each carrier is limited to one animal, with the exception being that two puppies or kittens from the same litter or breed can share a carrier. However, during periods of extreme temperatures, or from April 15 to October 15, Hawaiian Airlines may limit pet transport in cargo, particularly from specific locations like San Jose, Sacramento, Las Vegas, and Phoenix, due to safety concerns.

Pet in cargo

If your pet is too large for the cabin or checked baggage, or if it needs to travel alone, Hawaiian Airlines' Cargo Department can assist. You can speak to a live person at 1-844-402-8105 (fast) / 1-800-367-5320 for detailed information and arrangements.

Carrier guidelines

The carrier guidelines are specific and designed to ensure the comfort and safety of your pet. For cabin travel, the carrier must be soft-sided, leak-proof, and spacious enough for your pet to move comfortably. The maximum size allowed is 16" x 10" x 9.5". Pets must remain in their carriers throughout the flight. For checked baggage, carriers should be hard-sided, and their size depends on the aircraft type: up to 36" x 25" x 27" for 717 aircraft and 40" x 27" x 30" for 767 aircraft.

Other Restrictions

Hawaiian Airlines advises against travelling with snub-nosed (short-nosed) dog and cat breeds due to health risks. These breeds include American Staffordshire Terrier, Burmese, American Pit Bull Terrier, Boston Terrier, Exotic, Himalayan, Boxer, Persian, Brussels Griffon, Bulldogs, Bull Mastiff, Bull Terrier, Chow Chow, Dutch Pug, English Bulldog, Japanese Pug, Japanese Spaniel Chin, Lhasa Apso, Pekingese, Pit Bull, Pug, Shar Pei, Shih Tzu, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. This policy is in place to ensure the well-being of these breeds, which can face respiratory challenges during flights.
